Abstract: This article reconstructs the history of the personal archives of Galileo and his followers, from their creation until they became public property with the establishment of the Galileo Collection at the Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale in Florence. It shows how the motives of their curators reflected changing attitudes to the role of scientific culture in Italy.
